NMS MUNNING at B. D. SOMANI, Mumbai

A group of 10 NMS Boarding School Students participated in a 3 day model United Nations Conference at B.D. Somani School Mumbai. It was an opportunity to collaborate and deliberate . Simulating as representatives of UN members of U.K. Tibet, China, Columbia, UAE, Bangladesh, Japan, Pakistan, and Italy the students took up various issues for discussion in four U N committees – General Assembly, Security Council, Economic & Social Council and Human rights council. Topics on the agenda ranged from Darfur crisis, genetically modified food, eradication of illicit drug crops and weaponistion of space. The simulation of the United Nations bodies was done very formally. For 3 days the participants had to present their country’s stand on the issue, discuss impromptu and prepare a working paper & consequently a resolution to these problems. Students had to work to meet the emergencies reported to the committees at number of times. It not only introduced the students with the working of the UN bodies but also provided an opportunity to build up confidence & develop skills of speaking, planning and team building.
The students are so enthusiastic that they want to translate this learning experience into organizing a MUN at NMS…………………a training for leaders of tomorrow.
