Volunteer from
Bowdoin College, USA at Nischay Girls School
Mr. Samuel Stack from
Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine USA was a volunteer at “Nischay Girls
School” from 28-May-2007 to 31-May-2007 for community service. He is an
under graduate studying Religion, Japanese and English Literature. Along
with studies he is a part time musician and is also engaged in
carpentry.
On his first visit to India, his first destination was Agra to see the
Taj Mahal. Next he visited the heritage city of Jaipur and from here he
proceeded to Kashmir.
Here are excerpts of an interview with him:-
What brought you to India?
Curiosity. I have taken courses in Indian religion and have studied
Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam as well. I plan to learn Hindi.
Tell us something about your visit to Nischay School.
I had planned a holiday to India. My friend W. Oppenlieim runs a
volunteer network called “OmPrakash Foundation”. He was in touch with
the school and he guided me to visit Nischay where I decided to do a bit
of volunteer community work.
Honestly, I am impressed with Nischay. I wish, I would not have come
during the summer break. The girls are curious and very well
disciplined.
I did some rhymes with them like, Row-Row-Row your boat, come by here,
Mary had a little Lamb etc. I was amazed at the willingness and the
enthusiasm with which the girls took the music lessons. I also did some
alliteration exercises with them.
What are the future plans of OmPrakash Foundation?
This organization works for Nepal, Tibet and India. The organization
plans to send volunteers this summer to India of which some would
definitely be visiting “Nischay”.
Sum up your Nischay visit.
With the kind of skills and training being imparted at “Nischay”, I am
sure that a definite positive change will take place in the lives of
these girls of the under privileged section of society and they would be
able to live a better life.
