French Teacher
from US in-campus
Samantha
Ganglani, a student of Bowdoin College, Maine, USA was in school on a 3
week teaching programme from July 9, 2007 to July 27, 2007. With her
specialization in French & Spanish languages, she was a indeed a treat
to our students learning French.
The children worked on their basic grammar, oral pronunciation & accent
through her classes. She also taught a few rhymes to the girls of
Nischay school like ‘itsy bitsy’ spider & ‘row-row –row your boat’.
Excerpts of an interview with her.
Q. How was your experience teaching in our school?
A – It was great. It was my first teaching experience in a regular
school. I have taught earlier in Sunday school in church in U.S.A. But
classroom teaching here was very different.
Q. How did you fund students here?
A- Adorable kids. They are disciplined, eager to learn and listen. There
are kind of there for you. They have an amazing sense of curiosity. They
are so courteous. Some of them offered me to visit their homes and take
me round the city.
Q. How did you conduct you classes?
A. I basically worked on the accent of the French language students.
I stressed on oral pronunciation and repetitions.
Then I also worked on their grammatical usage and children were really
enthusiastic and picked up fast. So basically it was “Building up the
foundation”.
Q. And how did you find the school culture here?
R.– The school runs so smoothly even with so many children and class
divisions. In my high school with just 900 children it was very
difficult to organize. But here, there’s plenty of help around.
Everything is so well organized and orderly.
Q. Would you share your experiences of teaching girls of Nischay school?
R- They were very good. They seemed to be surprised to see me at first.
But then they could get what I was saying and they followed easily. I
believe efforts like ‘Nischay’ are very impressive. I feel honoured that
I could work with them even if for a little while. I’ll carry long
lasting memories with me.
