Teacher on-campus
Rama Chaitale, an
undergraduate student from Bowdoin College , Maine ( USA ) was in school
for a 3 week teaching programme. She took classes for improvement of
conversational skills among students of Grade 5 to 7.It was a wonderful
learning experience for many a children who were otherwise shy to
express themselves.
Excerpts of an interview with her:
Q. What do you think should be done to enhance better conversational
skills among children in school?
A. First and foremost appreciate every effort. They should not be
reprimanded at out of place ideas and grammatical errors. Instead
encourage them to think deeper .Also lead them to think out of the box.
As they open up they can interact very confidently.
Q. How would you correct their language and grammatical errors?
A. I won’t stop them in between a conversation. As long as they are
thinking it is fine. I would rather note down a few mistakes that they
committed and after the class I would tell them the correct usage.
Q. Could you explain a few activities that you conducted in your
class?
A. I began with an activity ‘an adjective with my name’ where each
student tells an adjective with the first letter of his name, then we
did an activity called ‘introduce your friend’, where students were
grouped into pairs and asked a few questions from each other and on that
basis introduced him or her to the rest of the class. Then I took ’think
deeper’ and ‘ think out of the box’ activities where I showed them some
objects of daily use and the students had to give all possible uses of
these things. They came out with really interesting answers.
Q. How did the children respond to your classes?
A. Amazing! They were very enthusiastic. They were attentive throughout
and could recall what others had said in the class.
Q. What did you experience working with the school?
A. It was my first chance to work with Indian students but I enjoyed
being with them. They are so enthusiastic and fast to pick up. I would
to love to continue this in future.
