Birding Fair 2002

December 4, 2002

All the students of standard IV and V were looking forward to the 6th Birding fair at Mansagar Lake to which the school organized a visit. All of them reached the Mansagar Lake on the morning of 4th December by the school bus and were very excited at the prospect of seeing various species of birds and visiting a birding fair was a new experience for many of them.
Many resource personnel were present to help the children to spot the various species of birds aroundthe lake.
According to the organizers of the show, with small modifications and little  effort, it

is possible to observe 10,000 birds at a time in this lake during the peak winter season. The development of Mansagar has been taken up on a war footing. The JDA formally launched a cleaning campaign on May 30, 2002 when the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Mr. Ashok Gehlot gave a call for Shram-Dan, to desilt the lake bed.
Some of the birds which have already been spotted this year are Flamingo, Stork, Pelican, Great Cormorant, Gray Heron, Egret, Pariah Kite, Eagle, Vulture, Quail,Herring GulLittle Tern, Ring Dove, Koel, Spotted Owlet, common Kingfisher,  Black Drongo, Common Myna, Jungle Babbler, House Crow etc.

Since Mansagar represents their aquatic home, it shall have to offer both the varieties of food to the birds that have been frequenting this lake. Fish, Frog Snake, Insects and Micro Organism are needed by carnivorous birds. The herbivorous birds survive on plants, seeds and for a change also devour insects.

The birding fair was a very enriching experience for all the students and it gave them the opportunity to get close to nature. Such opportunities should never be missed
